Our Process
In order to effectively promote Turning Pages LA, we needed a vehicle for sharing literature. We started our project by constructing the physical homes for our books, which we called Micro-Libraries. This stage required investments on materials, learning carpentry skills, and large amounts of time.
Once we completed the first stage of our project, we needed books to fill our Micro-Libraries. We sought out educational and influential literature, books that addressed real-world issues that youth might relate to. We paired these with children/young adult books in order to appeal to all age groups. We acquired books through donations, book drives, and purchase using GoFundMe investments.
The final step to establish Turning Pages LA was to place our Micro-Libraries in high-traffic areas. We sought to get permission from property owners to allow Micro-Libraries near their establishments, such as Watts Community Core and The Mother Ship LA. We intentionally focused on areas with less funding and therefore less access to public libraries. This stage of the project allowed us to bond with new communities through the connections we made.
